Year 1
Course Artifacts
The following are a few of the materials that I believe best represent the knowledge that I have gained throughout my first year in the Teacher Education Program.

Professional Learning ChartProfessional development is so important not only at the beginning of the teaching career but also continuously throughout the career. There is always more to learn, as a teacher candidate I aim to continue my learning and developing to better provide for my students. I am grateful for the opportunities that we have been given over the past year and I am looking forward to participating in more of these opportunities.

Google ClassroomThis google classroom was created in the PED 3114 Language Arts and Arts course. This google classroom is filled with read-aloud books to introduce children to different social justice issues. Read-aloud books are a great way to get students talking about difficult topics. They also help build stronger connections between their learning because they can make meaningful connections between their lived experiences and the book.

Nibi's Water Song - Persuasive Writing Lesson PlanNibi’s Water Song discusses the injustices that many Indigenous communities face regarding the lack of clean drinking water in their communities. Nibi is a young Indigenous girl who goes to get a drink of water from her kitchen sink but all that comes out is dirty brown water. Only with the help of everyone in Nibi's community and surrounding communities was Nibi able to advocate for clean water.
This read-aloud and adjoining lesson introduces students to the importance of advocating for change. Within this activity, students are participating in real-world learning by writing letters to the Prime Minister of Canada advocating for clean water in Indigenous communities. |
Anti-Racist Teaching ToolboxThis teaching toolbox includes resources to be used in the classroom to teach students about Indigenous awareness. It contains three resources that I believe to be quality resources to use within a classroom and two resources that should be avoided.
This toolbox has opened my eyes on the importance of looking into each resource that we decide to use in our classroom. There are many good resources that teachers can use in their classroom to teach students about Indigenous awareness, but there are also many resources that should be avoided. |

STEM Activity- Paper ChainThis learning opportunity was designed as an opportunity for teacher candidates to practice facilitating a STEM activity. The paper chain activity gives students one piece of paper and tape. They are asked to create the longest paper chain that they can. There are no other instructions given, students are working together and activating prior knowledge to complete their paper chain. This activity gives students the opportunity to see how each group might do it differently even though they were all given the same instructions. This shows students that each group is unique and we do not need to take the same approach to get the same results.
