The following are a few of the learning opportunities I shared with my Grade 2 Practicum class this year.

The Magical YET Read-AloudThe Magical YET teaches students that although they might not be able to do something at the moment, each and every one of us have a YET who is carried with us throughout our lives and helps us to learn new things.
I read this book to my grade 2 class and it opened up a discussion about the things that we could not do but then we could. We talked about the emotions that someone may feel when they cannot do something, but how happy you feel once you finally can. The grade 2 students then designed their YET. Each one of their designs were individual and unique. With these designs, they also included a writing piece that shared somethings that they could not do but then learned how to do, and also things that they want to learn with their YET by their side. |
Social Studies UnitI taught this lesson to my Grade 2 students as an introduction to our global communities unit. The students were so excited to look at the map and began immediately sharing the places that they knew. Some students were sharing where their families were from, others were sharing the places that they had visited and others were sharing parts of the map that they had learned previously. After this initial lesson, as a class we took trips to each continent and visited countries that students were most interested in learning about. This included countries that students had relations to and they were given the opportunity to share their knowledge with the class.

Directed DrawingThe students in my grade 2 class have a very strong interest in drawing and colouring. Based on these observations I wanted to give students the opportunity to do more art activities but also help them understand that we are all different and all our work is unique.
Directed drawings give students the opportunity to follow step by step instructions while also allowing them the opportunity to create their own art. After completing their work they are able to see that even though we all had the same directions each and every photo is unique, because we are unique individuals. |
